Northwest of Camrose

On a recent roadtrip, Rhoda and I came across this Ukrainian Catholic church off a secondary highway, northwest of Camrose. Exultation of the Holy Cross was built in 1921. It seemed the congregation was no longer meeting there; we waded through knee-deep drifts to reach the building. Maybe they relocate to a warmer building in the winter? Regardless, the church exterior appears to be lovingly maintained. These buildings have a simple beauty in their construction.

Qualicum

This week I visited my mom and dad's home near Qualicum Beach, on the east side of Vancouver Island. Beach walks, birdwatching, and Christmas baking ensued. It was the perfect way to sign off from the previous semester!

Tour of Alberta

In the beautiful foothills west of Okotoks we enjoyed a roadside picnic while waiting for the peloton to climb our hill. It was all over rather quickly as they flew past in one big hum. Exciting to see a world class cycling event!

Evening Paddle

A warm August evening near Biggar, SK. It's the weekend of the annual Dyck family gathering - "Dyck Days". After a large family meal, we set out paddling on a quiet lake just down the road from the house.

Car Show

Recently I covered some shifts at the St. Albert Gazette, where I used to work full-time. The big event of the weekend was a classic car show, which I always find hard to make interesting pictures of. It took some time, but I came up with these.

Shoot Film

I still shoot film sometimes. I like how it slows me down, forces me to be more intentional. These photos were taken (except the first one...) with my trusty Bessa rangefinder, which is a refreshingly simple machine compared to digital cameras. Just a lightproof box with a couple knobs on it. It also fits in a pocket which means it more often comes with me.

England

The first two weeks of our month abroad were spent in England aboard a Fiat Hymer camper caravan with my Aunty Jude and close family friend Thena.  Our trusty vehicle provided a unique way to experience rural Britain. Some of the sanctioned caravan sites are located in farmer's fields right alongside the sheep herd. We began in South England in The New Forest and the Dorset coast, then headed towards the Cotswolds. From there we headed East for some sailing and cycling in the Norfolk Broads. Finally, we drove South to Cambridge where we parted ways, Rhoda and I bound for Turkey.

Aunty Jude and Thena were perfect travelling companions -  curious, adventurous and so generous to us!

420

Despite chilly weather, thousands gathered in the Legislature's backyard April 20th for the annual pro cannabis rally. I wish the year's other demonstrations--those calling for improvements in social policy, fighting education cuts, or drawing attention to environmental issues--would draw the same numbers.
