Shriners, or the Ancient Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, are a branch of Freemasonry. Edmonton is home to the Al Shamal Shrine Temple. Aside from the miniature cars and motorbikes, one of the most recognizable units of the temple is the Oriental Band. They drift through parades clad in caricatures of Middle Eastern dress, and perform tunes such as the "Sheik of Araby". I was given permission to spend a few hours with them before the Capital Ex parade on July 19, 2012.
This man is one of our best friends. So cool.
Some neat mid-century houses and lots along Scona Road are being sold off for "dream home" development opportunities. It is an amazing location looking across to downtown. If your dreaming of pink stucco and plastic columns, please don't buy this property.
